Bunge Museum

On the northern tip of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, the Bunge Museum is an open-air collection of farmhouses, windmills and workshops that preserves the island's rural life as it was lived before the 20th century. Founded in 1907, it's one of the oldest folk museums in Sweden.

The collection includes several medieval farmsteads with their original furnishings, a picture-stone gallery featuring carved limestone slabs from the Viking Age, and a working church with 14th-century paintings. It all sits in a quiet meadow landscape that hasn't changed much in centuries.

Gotland has a particular quality of light — luminous, Baltic, slightly golden — and the Bunge Museum, with its weathered wood and wildflower meadows, catches it beautifully.
