Millesgården

Perched on a hillside on the island of Lidingö just outside Stockholm, Millesgården is the former home and studio of sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, painter Olga Milles. What makes it extraordinary isn't just the art — it's the setting. The terraced gardens hang over the water, with Milles's bronze figures standing on columns and plinths as if suspended between sky and sea.

Milles lived and worked here from 1906, collecting art and building a personal world that felt more like a stage set than a private home. He was deeply inspired by ancient Rome — you can see it in the classical columns, the fountain architecture, and the figures themselves. After his death, the estate became a public museum while remaining one of the most atmospheric places to experience sculpture anywhere in Scandinavia.
