La Casa Azul — the Blue House — is probably the most vivid domestic space you'll ever walk through. Frida Kahlo was born in this house in 1907, returned to it after her accident, lived and painted here with Diego Rivera, and died here in 1954. It became a museum in 1958.

The cobalt blue walls are just the beginning. Inside you'll find her studio exactly as she left it — brushes, palette, corset, wheelchair — all preserved with an intimacy that makes you feel almost intrusive. Her collection of Mexican folk art, her four-poster bed with the mirror above it, the kitchen with its bright yellow ceramics: every room tells you something about who she was.

Coyoacán itself is worth the trip — it's a neighbourhood that feels slightly removed from the rest of the city, full of markets, bookshops and street food.

Book in advance — it sells out weeks ahead. Worth every bit of effort to get a ticket. The studio room in particular is incredibly moving.
