The Brontë Parsonage in Haworth stands at the top of the village's steep cobbled main street, with the churchyard immediately in front and the open moorland immediately behind. It was the home of the Brontë family from 1820 to 1861, and within its modest rooms Charlotte, Emily, and Anne produced some of the most powerful novels in the English language — Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall among them.

The museum is particularly notable for the richness and intimacy of its collection: the original furniture, the miniature books the children made, the manuscripts, the portraits, and the thousand personal objects that make the family feel vividly present. The influence of the moorland landscape — visible from every back window — that saturates their fiction is immediately comprehensible in this setting.

Visiting the Brontë Parsonage is one of the most compelling literary pilgrimages in England. Allow at least two hours for the house and the collection, and walk out onto the moors afterwards. Haworth's atmospheric village and the moorland paths complete the experience.

One of the most moving places I have ever visited. The miniature books the children made are extraordinary, and standing in Emily's room with the moors visible behind the house is overwhelming.
